Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan set up its first school in 1849. Over the years, it built Chongwen Ge, Chui Eng Free School, Tao Nan School, Ai Tong School, Chong Hock Girls' School, Nan Chiau High School and Kong Hwa School.
Initially, these schools adopted prevailing China's curriculum and taught Chinese culture and values, including Analects of Confucius (Lun Yu 《论语》), in Hokkien. To meet the pace of societal changes, these soon gave way to offering English Language and Mathematics in addition to the Chinese Language.
Today, the six affiliated schools: Tao Nan School, Ai Tong School, Chong Fu Primary School, Nan Chiau High School, Nan Chiau Primary School and Kong Hwa School have a combined enrolment of 14,000 students and 700 staff. They share a common set of mission and motto:
| Mission: |
• |
To provide for development in the moral, cognitive, physical, social and aesthetic spheres; |
| • |
To instill a love for the nation and the community; |
| • |
To equip students with basic life skills; |
| • |
To preserve and promote Chinese language and Chinese culture. |
| Motto: |
Sincerity & Perseverance |

Tao Nan School was first established in 1906 at a private residence before moving to 39 Armenian
Street in 1910. The school was originally one of the five schools founded by Hokkien Huay Kuan
with the aim of providing pupils with a primary education. The name and mission of the school
(道南学堂) can be translated as "spreading our philosophy, our culture and our
ideas to the South".
Although Tao Nan School started as a Chinese school, it began conducting classes in English from 1914.
Urban renewal necessitated the relocation of the school to its present premises in Marine Parade in
1982. It then became a full-fledged English stream school to meet the needs of the nation. In 1990,
its excellent results paved the way for it to be accorded the status of a Special Assistance Plan
(SAP) school. In 1993, a new building was added to cope with the increasing demand for places. In
1996, Tao Nan School became one of the hosting schools for the Gifted Education Programme (GEP) in the
eastern part of Singapore.

Ai Tong School started at a Methodist Church at Boon Tat Street in 1912 with about 30 pupils. In 1929,
Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan took over the school management. In 1955, when the construction of SHHK
building was completed, Ai Tong moved into the building with Chong Hock Girls School (now named
Chongfu Primary School).
In the seventies, urban renewal caused enrolment to drop and the School Management Committee decided
to relocate the school to Ang Mo Kio. In 1990, Ai Tong School was among the pioneer batch of schools
to be accorded SAP status. Plans were made to move the school to a larger site when enrolment soared.
Ai Tong moved to 100 Bright Hill Drive on 9 July 1992.
The school has also attained many laudable achievements outside the classroom. In line with Singapore
Hokkien Huay Kuan's objective to preserve Chinese language, values and culture, the school
developed excellent programmes in essay writing, guzheng, wushu, Chinese dance, calligraphy, art and
choir. Ai Tong also excels in basketball, volleyball and table tennis.

Chongfu Primary School was founded on 16 April 1915 by Mr Wang Huiyi, then a Supervisor of Schools,
with Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan. Formerly known as Chong Hock Girls' School, it was located at Chongwen Ge
next to Thian Hock Keng temple
at Telok Ayer Street.
In 1955, it moved to SHHK building together with Ai Tong School. In 1985, enrolment dropped and
Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan decided to relocate Chongfu to Yishun New Town. After the relocation to
Yishun, the school started to take in pupils of all races and offered all three Mother Tongue
languages, namely Chinese, Malay and Tamil. The school underwent rebuilding and improvements from 2002
to 2003 and new facilities such as Heritage Gallery, Multi-media Library, Computer Labs and
classrooms, Seminar Room, AVA Rooms, Conference Room, Music Room and Dance Studio were provided to
further enhance the learning experience.
Chongfu has done well since its relocation to Yishun. Their PSLE results have consistently been above
the national average. Over the years, seven pupils were awarded the Prime Minister's Book Prize for
outstanding performances in the PSLE. The school has also done well in its CCAs.

Nan Chiau High School can trace its roots to the Nan Chiau Teachers' Training College, established in February
1941. Founded by Mr Tan Kah Kee, it was built on a plot of land donated by Mr Lee Kong Chian at Kim Yam Road.
During the Second World War, the Training College stopped operations. In 1947, Nan Chiau Teachers'
Training School was renamed Nan Chiau Girls' High School, with an ancillary primary school. A pre-university
section was added to Nan Chiau Girls' High School in 1950.
In 1965, Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan spent $2 million to rebuild the school premises. After
the rebuilding, the school population increased gradually. Two years later, Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan donated
another $300,000 to extend the school building.
In line with changes in the education system, English became the medium of instruction in 1980. Four
years later, Nan Chiau Girls' High School was renamed Nan Chiau High School and became a co-ed
school. In 2001, Nan Chiau High School moved to Seng Kang New Town and operated as two distinct
schools: Nan Chiau High School and Nan Chiau Primary School. A new chapter in the history of Nan Chiau
High School began.

same: to help realise the potential of every child in five main areas of development - Cognitive, Aesthetic,

Kong Hwa School was established in response to an urgent need to address the shortage of schools and
serious lack of education opportunities after the war. Construction of the school started in 1951 in a
swampy area in Guillemard Road.
The plot of land was donated by the late Mr Tan Lark Sye, Chairman of Hokkien Huay Kuan at that time. The
late Dr Lee Kong Chian spearheaded the donation drive with a personal donation of $300,000. Mr Liu Shou
Qian was appointed the first Principal of the school in 1952 and the school began operation in 1953.
The school was originally named after Dr Lee Kong Chian. However, upon his request, it was renamed Kong
Hwa School. The school started with about 360 pupils in 11 primary classes and 1 kindergarten class.
Its excellent results in the PSLE over the years, helped the school achieved the status of Special
Assistance Plan (SAP) School in 1991.
