The 16th Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Literary Awards Prize Presentation was held on Saturday, 25 Aug 18 at Singapore Hokkien Huay. Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Industry and Trade, Dr Koh Poh Koon, graced the ceremony as the Guest-of-Honour. The awards are an amalgamation of the following 3 awards:
Creative Writing with Photography Competition is a new initiative by the committee this year to encourage youths to submit photograph together with a short Chinese essay to express their creativity. The competition comprises of the upper and lower secondary categories with 5 winning entries from each category. There were a total of more than 100 entries this year.
The annually held competition aims to promote Chinese literary writing among the younger generation, in hopes of encouraging young, aspiring writers and raising the standard of Chinese Language in Singapore. Winning entries are also consolidated into 3 different essay publications of respective levels, providing a platform for students to learn and be inspired.
This year, a total of 100 students participated in the SHHK Affiliated Primary Schools Chinese Essay Writing Competition, 380 students from 86 secondary schools participated in the National Secondary School Chinese Creative Writing Competition（新蕾奖）and 247 entries from the Singapore Tertiary Literary Awards（大专文学奖） were received. More than 800 students participated in the above competitions with a total of 88 winners.
