Guardians Of The South Seas - Thian Hock Keng and Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan tracks the
developments and contributions of the Huay Kuan to the Chinese community in Singapore from the early
days to date. It also provides an account of the origins of Thian Hock Keng Temple and how it is
associated with Ma Zu (妈祖), the guardian of the South Seas.
History is not merely a reflection of the past. This record of our past is being published to help us
understand the present and thereby enable us to better project our future plans for the Huay Kuan. Mr Wee Cho
Yaw, President of Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan commented in the forward of the book, "As the country evolves,
so must the Huay Kuan. We are continually reviewing the social changes that are taking place in Singapore so
that we can adapt our activities accordingly. But the Huay Kuan's primary objectives will remain constant. We
will continue to focus on improving the quality of life for our members and the community, promoting Chinese
language and culture, and enhancing educational development. We remain committed to the Huay Kuan's founding
fathers' dedication to society and education."
This book comes in both English and Chinese language. The Chinese version was launched in April and the
English version will be available in 2006.
