Minister Shanmugam celebrates Chap Gor May Traditions at Spring Reception

Press Release

Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan (SHHK) today held its annual Spring Reception at the SHHK Building Plaza. The event saw more than 250 distinguished guests, including SHHK board of governors, council, honorary council and committee members, affiliated schools’ principals and staff, Chinese clan associations leaders and representatives, in attendance to celebrate the Year of the Rabbit.

Minister for Home Affairs and Law, Mr K Shanmugam graced the ceremony as the Guest-of-Honour.

Mr Thomas Chua, President of SHHK, said, “For the past two Spring Receptions, full attendance on site was not possible due to the pandemic. This year’s Spring Reception returns in full physical form and is held in conjunction with the Chap Gor May (or Yuan Xiao, 15th day of Chinese New Year) celebrations. We are happy to be able to showcase and share the colourful Chinese culture through traditional art forms like lion and dragon dance, calligraphy, lantern riddles and engage visitors with fun-filled traditional games for the family. Unity and togetherness are central to the celebration of Chap Gor May, and we hope visitors will bring back fond memories of an extraordinary time with their family and community.”

The Spring Reception this year aims to promote understanding and appreciation of traditional Chinese culture by creating an immersive and lively festive atmosphere in conjunction with the Chap Gor May celebration. The arts and cultural acitivities include traditional calligraphy, Chinese rainbow calligraphy, paper cutting, dough figurine making booths, lantern riddles, lion dance on stilts performance, LED dragon, stilts stunts, fishing for “luck” and parent-child mini carnival games.

Spring Reception is SHHK’s annual event aimed at connecting members and renewing shared ties amongst the Chinese clan association members, Chinese community and business leaders.
