16 teachers nationwide honoured with LEAP Award

• 7 primary school teachers, 5 secondary school teachers, 2 junior college teachers and 2 special education teachers awarded
• 7 schools won their first ever LEAP Award

Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan (SHHK) today honoured 16 exemplary teachers with the 15th LEAP (Listening Educator for Advancement and Progress) Award. Guest-of-Honour Mr Desmond Lee, Minister for Education, presented the LEAP Award to the seven primary school teachers, five secondary school teachers, two junior college teachers and two special education teachers at the annual SHHK Teachers’ Day Appreciation Dinner cum LEAP Award Presentation Ceremony.

The LEAP Award was launched by the late President S R Nathan in 2011 and awarded by SHHK annually to recognise exceptional teachers who have made a positive impact in nurturing their students from the heart. The naming of the award signifies a leap of faith for a teacher to believe that students have the potential to excel beyond their capabilities.

Mr Thomas Chua, President of SHHK, said, “Education is ultimately about people. The 16 teachers who received the LEAP Award fully demonstrated a sense of conviction and genuine care for the students under their charge. Besides imparting knowledge, they also paid close attention to their students’ holistic wellbeing. This nurturing warmth from a teacher is something that artificial intelligence cannot replace, and will become an increasingly important factor in schools of the future.”

This year, the Award received a total of 340 nominations from 205 schools – 145 primary school teachers, 150 secondary school teachers, 16 junior college teachers and 29 special education teachers, with each school limited to a maximum of two nominations. Seven schools saw their first ever LEAP Award recipients, namely, Fairfield Methodist School (Primary), Damai Secondary School, Anchor Green Primary School, Maitri School, Nanyang Primary School, New Town Primary School and St Andrew’s Junior College.

All nominees will receive a certificate of commendation from the organiser as a recognition of their outstanding commitment. The organiser hopes that more schools will come forward and nominate deserving teachers for the LEAP Award next year.
