In celebration of its 185th anniversary, the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan (SHHK) today hosted a Charity Run and Walk at the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) and saw more than 800 participants in attendance, including SHHK council members, Chinese clan association leaders and representatives, the teachers, staff, parents and students of six SHHK affiliated schools as well as SHHK members.
The event space was provided by NTU, with further funding support by The Hokkien Foundation, SHHK’s philanthropic and charitable arm. The event aims to showcase SHHK’s commitment towards education and its numerous supports for education in Singapore since its founding in 1840. It seeks to remind members to follow the footsteps of SHHK pioneers and forefathers in continuing to support education. All proceeds from the event will be donated to NTU.
Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Finance Mr Chee Hong Tat graced the event as the Guest-of-Honour and addressed participants before embarking on a short walk around the Yunnan Garden and trying out some of the cultural carnival games.
“We extend our heartfelt congratulations to SHHK on its 185th anniversary. We are honoured to host the event on our campus as they celebrate this significant milestone. We deeply appreciate SHHK’s enduring support and steadfast partnership with NTU over the years – a relationship that has contributed to the university’s growth and broader societal impact,” said Professor Ling San, Deputy President and Provost of NTU.
“The SHHK played a pivotal role in the founding of Nanyang University (Nantah), the predecessor of NTU. Since then, SHHK and NTU have shared a strong partnership, grounded in a common vision to nurture the next generation of leaders in research, technology and entrepreneurship in Singapore. We remain committed to deepening this partnership to uplift students and communities in our next phase of development in the knowledge economy,” said Mr Thomas Chua, President of SHHK.
The 5km Charity Run took runners around the NTU campus, while the 1.85km Charity Walk brought participants to some of the most iconic sights including the rejuvenated Yunnan Garden, the Nanyang Lake, the Tan Lark Sye Walk, the Nantah Memorial, and the Nanyang University Arch.
The event also featured a lively mini carnival with eight cultural game booths, offering parents and children the opportunity to play together and collect at least five stamps to redeem a prize. Complementing the festive atmosphere were a variety of food trucks and stalls, providing refreshments to satisfy participants’ appetites. Additionally, two exhibitions at the Chinese Heritage Centre Museum – Nantah Pictorial Exhibition and Chinese More or Less Exhibition – were specially open for carnival goers to explore the legacy of Nantah through over 130 photographs and learn more about the evolving identity of the overseas Chinese community.
